What Should You Eat Before and After a Workout?

I get this question a lot. And it’s a good question to know the answer to! What you eat before and after your workouts is going to play a big part in the results that you get.

Let me break it down easily for y’all:

 

Meal Guidelines

Depending on your stomach/how you handle eating and working out, you should eat healthy carbs paired with healthy fats 30-90 minutes before your workout. I usually eat around 30 minutes before a workout, just because my stomach can handle it. If you know you’ll barf if you eat so close to your workout, try and hour or an hour and a half out.

The healthy carbs are going to give you energy to get through the workout, while the healthy fat is going to help keep you from feeling hungry during your workout.

After your workout you want to aim to eat protein (!!!) and a healthy carb within 30-60 minutes. The sooner, the better. A protein shake is a quick, easy way to get your protein in right after a workout. You want to consume protein post- workout to help with muscle repair and growth. Eating healthy carbs post-workout is going to replenish your muscle glycogen stores.
