Carbs Are Like Teenagers…Misunderstood

Happy Talk It Out Tuesday (: Today’s topic: carbs…dun dun dun.

My heart gets SO sad when I hear people say that they want to stop eating carbs. Not only are carbs super delicious, but your body actually NEEDS them! Poor carbs…they’re so misunderstood. Today’s post is hopefully going to teach you a little bit about carbs! The good vs. the bad.

Carbs Explained

Simple carbs are digested quicker by the body. Complex carbs take a little bit longer to digest and they don’t raise sugar levels in the blood as quickly as simple carbs do. Fruit is considered a “simple carb” but research says that they are still a good source of fiber for our bodies. Good carbs are the body’s main source of fuel! Over half of our body’s energy comes from carbs. The energy is used to preform day-to-day functions such as digestion, body movement, breathing, working out, heart beating…you know, those important kind of things.

It’s important to know that there isn’t one way that works for everyone. You have to figure out which eating habits work best with your body. This is just a guideline to teach you a little bit more about the science behind carbs. I like to eat good carbs about an hour before my workouts so that my body is nice and fueled up. I think it’s best to eat mostly complex carbs and to keep your simple carb intake to a minimum.

So basically: you need carbs! Don’t kick them to the curb. Just kick certain ones.

    I try to tell people this all the time.. its what kind you eat that are bad, they are fuel and you need them just don’t eat the bad ones lol

  • Thanks for this Jessica! I once cut out all carbs thinking I was doing the right thing and my body felt AWFUL! I have however learned the difference between good and bad carbs, and found a good balance of putting them in my body!
