The Best Equipment for Building a Basic Home Gym

Posted on September 22, 2014 at 12:01 am by

This is another frequently requested post…I love when y’all tell me things you want to read about! It’s fun for me to put together the idea with my own spin on it (: As most of you know, I do 80% of my workouts at home. If I’m not working out at my house, I’m working out at the studio where  I work.

It’s taken me awhile to figure out what my favorite at-home pieces of workout equipment are, mostly because when I started working out from home, I didn’t have the money to go buy an entire home gym at once. Over the past year I’ve slowly bought new things to add and I’m pretty happy with what I have going on.

Building a Home Gym

My Favorite At-Home Workout Equipment (aka the stuff I actually use):

  • BOSU ball
  • Jump rope
  • Kettlebells (I have a 25 pound one and just bought a 35 pound one)
  • Medicine ball
  • Dumbbells
  • Box (for box jumps)
  • Resistance bands
  • Stability ball
  • Foam roller

I use those things on a consistent basis! And if you can’t go out and buy everything at once, you can use stuff that you have at home. Like a chair or bench in place of the box, whole or half gallon water jugs for dumbbells, etc. Be creative! I do a lot of bodyweight training so I don’t need a ton of stuff.

I did ask for a squat rack for Christmas to keep in the garage to work on my lower body though…we’ll see if Santa cooperates (;

Oh and another reason why I decided to do this post today…

I had a few setbacks and put it on the back burner for awhile. But now everything is in full swing and it will be up and going within the next 2 months.

I’ve changed some things up and brought a partner on board to film the workouts with me! His name is Drew (you might know him as @ignitefitnesstraining on Instagram). We both work at the same studio and have similar goals for our fitness careers so it’s a great match.

We’ll be filming full workouts (between 15-30 minutes) together, with him doing the advanced version and me doing the regular and/or modified versions. This way you can workout with your husbands/boyfriends/guy friends! Think of it as his & her fitness!

The equipment that I listed above will come in VERY handy if you choose to join our online gym. In case you missed the post about how the online gym works, here’s a quick rundown:

  • We will post one new workout video per week (full length).
  • We will release a weekly workout schedule that will be 5 days worth of planned workouts (using our archived workout videos).
  • The only people who will be able to view the videos are members who have subscribed to our online gym. The price will be between $10-$15 per month.

So $10-$15 per month will get you access to one new full length workout video per week AND all the archived workout videos. BOOM. We are seriously so pumped, y’all. It’s gonna be awesome! More to come on the online gym…I promise to keep y’all posted!

Now go crush this Monday with a killer workout!
xo, Jess
