4 Keys to a Successful Health & Fitness Journey

Pointing your health & fitness journey in the right direction can be confusing. I always get asked for advice on where to start and what to do. We are constantly given an overload of information that can make us go crazy if we let it. So today I want to share 4 BASIC keys to a successful health & fitness journey.

I’m gonna break it down as easily as I can:

Anyway, what do all these mean?

Find time to enjoy yourself.

If you skip a workout at the gym to spend the day in the sunshine, don’t panic. Just make sure you try to do something active while you’re outside and make extra good food choices that day. It’s important to make time to do things that you love to do (or eat) so that you’re not feeling overwhelmed. Health & fitness is a journey…take it day by day and make it a lifestyle.

Sleep well (and enough).

A lot of people (umm guilty) tend to put this one on the back burner. But sleep is a must for a successful health & fitness journey. Sleep is what allows our bodies to recover. Not only should we be getting enough sleep (around 7-8 hours per night), but we also need to be getting good sleep. And hello, who doesn’t WANT to get good sleep? Some tips for getting good sleep:

  • make time to “get ready” for bed (washing your face, putting on comfy PJs, reading for a few minutes)
  • set the mood for peaceful sleep (turn the TV/phone/lights off and sleep somewhere that is cool and comfortable)
  • take a few minutes to clear your head before you try to fall asleep (whether you can just think or have to write things down, get it out)

Eat healthy food and drink a lot of water.

Pretty point blank. You are what you eat, after all. Make sure you’re making food choices that are going to support your training rather than hurt it. You can read about eating clean here. And drinking lots of water is another thing that turned my health & fitness journey around. I’ve noticed that I’m leaner and my skin is clearer when I’m drinking enough water. I shoot for 90 ounces a day. You should be drinking at least 8 cups (64 ounces) per day.

And last but not least,

Workout regularly.

Make working out a habit. Just like taking a shower or brushing your teeth. Working out is imperative to our well being. You don’t have to spend hours a day working out (45-60 minutes per day is plenty if you’re working out effectively…aka not just standing on the elliptical texting). I personally workout 5-6 days a week for about 45-60 minutes per day and take 1 “rest day.” On my rest day I still like to go on a walk or a bike ride or something.

The bottom line: you’ve gotta figure out what works best for you. Give your all in these 4 areas and your results won’t be far off! Dedication & commitment will take you where you want to be. Everyone’s journey is different!
